Westbury White Horse on a blustery day. Visited this location a number of times and was fortunate to see these kite flyers. They’d passed by earlier but I missed the opportunity to photograph them. Couldn’t believe my luck a little later when I saw the kite appear over the hill followed by its owners.
The white horse was cut in the hillside 300 years ago and the adjacent Iron Age hill fort was established 2000 years ago.

Smashing photograph Simon! 🙂
Cheers Adrian!
I think I’ve been to that White Horse – they’re amazing aren’t they. I used to love kite-flying when I was in the windy Outer Hebrides – we all used to go and do it 🙂
Carol.
I’ve always loved the white horses, especially at Uffington, which I cycled to on many occasions during my childhood. Flying a kite in the Outer Hebrides sounds a lot of fun!
the Outer Hebrides are the windiest place in Britain so it was but many kites got shredded or lost
I have two kites that have been sat in the shed for years. If I visit the Outer Hebrides I’ll take both along – a main kite and a backup in case of an unforseen disaster!
most of our coastline is pretty windy – just go to the seaside (I think you’re fairly near aren’t you?)
May give it a go one day – yes the coast is not far from me.
Delightful in every way.
Thanks Paula. Enjoyed my visit to the Westbury and Uffington white horses. I was born in Wiltshire so it was great to go back.
Sometimes it is just luck to be in the right place at the right time. Great shot.
You’re right Barbara. I thought I’d missed the shot but was pleased the kite and it’s owners made a reappearance.
Great shot Simon. Those people make the scene come alive. It looks so good in B&W too – nice contrast.
Cheers Andy. As soon as they walked in to view I felt they might add something to the composition. Next time I’ll take my kite along – they looked like they were having a lot of fun.
Those two persons with the kite really makes this an awesome shot. They add depth and a counterpoint to the White Horse.
Thanks Otto, I was so pleased they came back with their kite.
I’ve never been as close to this particular White Horse … how fabulous to capture horse and kite flyers ! Love it .
Thank you. I hope you get chance to see this horse closer up, there’s a car park near by and the fort is well worth visiting too.
such an interesting photo, it feels like a whole story in an image
I was very pleased they returned with the kite after missing the chance to photograph them earlier. Thanks Holly.
