About

newcastle054

Living in Cumbria, I regularly explore the Lake District, Solway Coast and Hadrian’s Wall to photograph the diverse landscape and seascape. Further afield, I’ve made photographs at a number of locations in the Faroe Islands, Scotland, Northumberland, Anglesey, Oxfordshire and on the Western Front. I use both digital SLR and medium format film cameras.

My work has been published and has been exhibited in Cumbria, Berlin and Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. My photos are held in a number of private collections in the UK, USA, Australia and Cyprus.

Prints of my photographs are available as archival pigment prints or platinum/palladium prints (19th century contact printing process) and can be purchased through my website or at the Crafts of the North craft fairs I attend in Keswick, Cumbria.

In 2019 I’m planning to visit Northwest Scotland which will include visits to Cape Wrath and Sandwood Bay.

Closer to home I’ll be visiting the Lake District, Solway Coast and Hadrian’s Wall throughout the year and will continue to photograph venues the Beatles performed in.

My work includes:

  • Landscape/Seascape/Night Photography – Shot with a digital SLR camera.
  • Platinum Palladium Prints – 19th century contact printing process.
  • Pinhole Film Photography.
  • Medium Format Film Photography.
  • Vest Pocket Kodak – Images from the Western Front made with vintage Vest Pocket Kodaks.

  1. Found your blog via a search for pinhole photography. You have some wonderful images and look forward to keeping up with your work. You also turned me onto Vermeer pinhole cameras, which I was previously unaware of. They seem very reasonably priced, compared to their Zero Image counterparts.

    • Thanks for your comments and taking time to visit my blog. The Vermeer cameras are reasonably priced but I will have to make some modifications to the two I have (6×12 and 6×9) so they are more robust. With one the film was difficult to wind and ended up jamming. The resulting photos come out very well when using the Vermeers – almost as if looking into a different world.

    • Thank you, Evan. Enjoyed reading your blog and viewing the excellent work you have done – looking forward to seeing more. Thanks for taking the time to visit my blog and following 🙂

  2. Thanks for the recent follow of my blog. It had the happy outcome of leading me here and giving me the opportunity to admire your extensive array of b/w imagery.

  3. I’m trying hard to get round to getting my photography blog started. Keep putting it off to deal with ‘important matters’ (who am I kidding). Got to browsing around and came across yours Simon and you nailed me right from the start. We’re in Central Scotland but spend A LOT of time in Northumberland. Your images of Berwick, Lindisfarne and Dunstanburgh Castle are so good.
Look forward to exploring more of your work.

  4. Hi,

Great photographs, really enjoyed looking through. I imagine that the physical prints are stunning!

I’m about half way through putting together my platinum printing setup. Light box mostly built, book bought etc. I just need to find a suitable way of mounting the negative to keep it in good contact with the paper – do you find that using two plates of glass works well enough (for different paper types)? I was considering building a vacuum frame but only if I have to. I’m printing from a digital camera – reasonably high resolution so hopefully up to scratch and not thinking about anything too large.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    • Thanks for taking a look and commenting, Mike. I really appreciate it.

I use Arches Platine and Bergger COT-320 paper. The plates of glass I use are 16 x 20 inch and a 1/4 inch thick and I’ve made 8 x 10 inch prints with no problems. I may build a vacuum frame one day but for smaller prints I think two plates of glass works very well.

Looking forward to seeing your prints. If you have any questions about platinum printing please get in touch and I’ll help out as much as I can.

      All the best,
      Simon.

    • Thanks Marks and Joey. I really appreciate your visit and I’m glad you like my work. Looking forward to seeing more of your wonderful photography.

      Best regards, Simon.

  5. I really like your work! You have an amazing eye and ability to capture some awesome sights! I can’t wait to see more.. I wanted to Like every photo.

  6. Simon, it’s so refreshing to find someone who a foot still in the old school. I know there are a few, but you do it with intent. I like that. Hope we can strike up some back and forth. I would really like to get back into larger format photography, but I’m struggling with reliable sources in the UK. Can you help? Cheers, Tim.

  7. You sound to have a great collection of cameras 🙂 I never learnt to process my own photos and think it would probably work out too expensive chemicals-wise for the amount I take really. But it must be nice to have that control.

I’m thinking of moving to NW Cumbria when I retire – Wigton probably (I can’t afford any of the nicer villages).
    Carol.

    • Thanks for stopping by, Carol. Wigton is a nice town, perfect for access to the Lakes and Scotland. I moved up here 12 years ago from Cornwall having lived in a number of locations throughout the UK. I feel settled in Cumbria – can’t see me moving again.

  8. Found your blog on the discover page and I’m glad I did because your blog is really inspirational. I love your unique and challenging projects you have going on!
