Milecastle 42 – Cawfields

Believed to have been built by the Legio II Augusta, this photo were taken at the southern gate. Very dramatic sections of Hadrian’s Wall still remain at Cawfields … colonies of cawing rooks and crows providing inspiration for the name. I’d spent a whole day close to Housesteads Roman Fort and decided to stop at Cawfields on my way home. Ended up photographing the milecastle from a number of different spots.
